Jekyll Island
is located in Glynn County on the Atlantic Coast, south of the Altamaha River. Glynn County is one of Georgia’s original eight counties, created in 1777, with the town of Brunswick being the only municipality in the county, which also serves as the county seat. Jekyll Island is one of four barrier islands of Glynn County, located across a six-mile, marsh hemmed causeway, covered with miles of pristine coastline and woodlands. The population of Jekyll Island is only around 1,000, and only 35% of the entire island is developed, with the rest being a natural conservation area. Therefore, real estate on the Jekyll Island is minimal. Founded in 1886, the Jekyll Island Club Hotel was once called "the richest, the most exclusive and most inaccessible club in the world.” The island was the winter retreat and playground for some of America's most elite families including such names as Morgan, Astor, Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Pulitzer and others. Much of that world has been preserved and restored as the Jekyll Island National Historic Landmark District. Today, those who are lucky enough to call Jekyll Island home share in the high quality of life, which is defined by the homes and natural landscape of this coastal community.
Glynn County, as a whole, is unique for many reasons. It has a unique history, natural amenities, beautiful houses, safe neighborhoods, and unlimited recreational activities, as well as hometown festivals and fairs. The area has top-notch medical facilities and an exceptional school system. Nine elementary schools, four middle schools and two high schools are located in Glynn County, which offer a comprehensive learning program in the basics, while at the same time encouraging individual interests and imagination. Homes in Glynn County range from quaint cottages, modern condominiums, historic residences and family homes. Developments and communities offer unique lifestyles in all of Glynn County, including Jekyll Island. On the mainland, you will find oak-lined avenues, complemented by Victorian-Edwardian homes. On the islands, both new and well-established residential developments can be found. Vacation rental properties and retirement properties are also available throughout Glynn County and the Golden Isles.
